I Can Only Imagine
11:00 isn’t exactly a late bedtime for most teenagers. Unless of course they have to wake up at 5:45 the next morning to Mercy Me’s “I Can Only Imagine”, and then run, swim, endure a log workout, wrestle, wrestle, and then wrestle some more. In fact, four wrestling sessions are scheduled for today; a combination of three technique sessions, each focusing on a different aspect of wrestling (neutral, bottom, and top), and one hard live session. Not bad for the second day of camp. But then again, it’s not called “The Toughest Wrestling Camp in America” for nothing!
Speaking of tough, no one could have imagined the Team Olympic Competition that Coach Cal organized for the second day of camp. Grouped in 6 member teams, the wrestlers were trucked down a race start line, anticipating a run. However, complicating the run were the hoisting ropes, sand bags, and team logs (basically TREES!). Each team carried a team log by ropes, hoisted high enough to prevent the sand bags that were draped over it from touching the ground-because JUST carrying a tree wasn’t hard enough for Coach Cal. Not to mention that the wrestlers trekked the ½ mile hike 4 times, using each team log to see which team would reign supreme after the four timed races were added together. Just like we mentioned yesterday, no one can ever predict the creative workouts of Coach Cal.
And a special thank you to all of the friends and family that are “liking” the Eternal Warrior Wrestling page, writing encouraging notes to the wrestlers, and following the blog. Each word of encouragement, no matter how small, helps while the wrestlers push themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually through each training exercise. Check back tomorrow for another action packed day in Trego, MT!
Wire Wheels, Logs, and Sandbags…
No one can ever predict the workouts that Coach Cal will think up for the first day of camp up here in Trego, MT. This year was no different. After the standard talk about the camp expectations, rules, and requirements the camp was off to a running start. Literally. After rushing to put all their gear away the campers sprinted to stage with their teams in the parking lot. It was then that Coach told them about their first task at the Eternal Warrior Wrestling camp. As a team, they had to carry a wire wheel weighing approximately 80lbs about a mile down the road. But that’s not all; in addition to the wire wheel, the campers had to figure out how to lug their own personal log AND sandbag down the road as team. Did we mention that they had to keep the wire wheel above their shoulders and that they were only allowed to put three items in the middle of the wheel to transport them? Oh and if anyone dropped a log or sandbag on the trek, the entire team had to move a hundred yards back! Needless to say, each team figured out how to work as a team and get their wheel down to the finish line-a cattle guard at the end of the road. Now a mile away from Trego School, the campers were faced with the second part of Coach Cal’s challenge. Running back to the school. No problem after having to run with the wheel, logs, and sandbags right? Wrong. This time they were running as a team INSIDE the wire wheel. That’s right, more teamwork to hold up the wagon wheel while standing between the spokes and running the mile back to the school. Bet that’s not what the campers had in mind for the first day of camp, but then again this isn’t just any wrestling camp; this is the Eternal Warrior Wrestling camp.
And that’s just the first activity of the day! Lights out isn’t until 11:00, and the campers will be getting their first taste of Coach Marc Dean’s log workouts as well as their first technique session with Coach Joe Johnston, but more about those later. It’s all in a days work up here in Trego. Check back tomorrow to read more about the Eternal Warrior experience. Today it’s wire wheels, logs, and sandbags; who knows what tomorrow is going to bring.
